To the Core of the matter
To get to the heart of biology, we need to zoom in. Beyond tissues, beyond cells, down to the level of proteins. These proteins are the tools, encoded in our genome, that make life work. Advances in life sciences research now allow us to refine these tools for our own purposes. This is what the VIB Nanobody and Protein Cores do. These two Core facilities stand out from the others by offering “production-based” molecular services. Their extensive experience and state-of-the-art technology allow them to produce their respective, often protein-based, products efficiently. Their close partnership allows them to build on each other’s work, which makes them both prominent players in the field of applied and basic protein biology.
Introducing the VIB Single Cell Core
As VIB’s newest Core Facility, the Single Cell Core culminated from a wide array of single-cell ‘omics’ activities across VIB between 2016 and 2021, after a complex ramp-up. “The single-cell domain is booming,” enthuses Niels Vandamme, Head of the VIB Single Cell Core. “But we can’t investigate single cells without working closely with other adjacent VIB Core Facilities, Tech Watch, and the center-embedded expertise units.”
VIB Tech Watch: laying the technological groundwork for excellent science
Founded in 2007, VIB Tech Watch – which, together with VIB Core Facilities, makes up VIB Technologies – was created with two key goals in mind. “Through the Tech Watch program, VIB scouts and evaluates emerging life sciences technologies and then provides scientists with the support they need to get the best out of them,” elaborates Wai Long Tam, Head of Tech Watch at VIB Technologies. “Today, we’re going beyond those two goals by setting up an entire business case for each new technology in collaboration with researchers, Core Facilities, and other stakeholders. It’s something completely new in our life sciences ecosystem.”
VIB Technologies: a paradigm shift for future-proof life sciences research
Encompassing the VIB Core Facility program and VIB Tech Watch, VIB Technologies brings highly complex, novel technologies to researchers – and unites researchers across disciplines – to achieve scientific breakthroughs.
