Thomas Abeel, VIB Department of Plant Systems Biology, UGent, is one of the winners in the first iDEA (Illumina’s Data Excellence Award) Challenge
Defect in A20 gene expression causes rheumatoid arthritis
16 August 2011
In Nature Genetics, VIB-UGent researchers demonstrate that a defect in the expression of the A20 gene can contribute to the development of rheumatoid arthritis in mice, identifying A20 as a target for the generation of new drugs.
VIB scientists win DREAM-5 for systems biology
18 March 2011
The DREAM is the most important benchmark for the comparison of computational models used in systems biology. Among all the top labs, their test was unanimously rated the overall best performer based on a number of gold standard data sets.
New insights into cancer treatment
15 March 2011
Cop1 has –for a long time - been seen as an attractive drug target for cancer. But Jean-Christophe Marine found out that Cop1 acts as a tumor suppressor. His new data will have direct implications for the development of cancer drug targets.
VIB-K.U.Leuven scientist Kevin Verstrepen develops a tailor-made yeast for beer with more flavour
19 January 2011
“We want you to create a strain of yeast for a very special kind of beer. It has to have a lot character, but it shouldn't be too heavy.” This was beer brewer Bart Landuyt's assignment for the lab of Kevin Verstrepen, one of VIB's yeast specialists.
Phytophtora resistant potato - background report
1 September 2010

First step to new therapy for chronic bowel disease
5 July 2010
Scientists associated with VIB and Ghent University (UGent) have discovered that A20 protein plays an important protective role in diseases associated with chronic bowel inflammation.
Biologists discover bacterial defense mechanism against aggressive oxygen
19 November 2009
Bacteria possess an ingenious mechanism for preventing oxygen from harming the building blocks of the cell. This is the new finding of a team of biologists.
A major step toward a more targeted treatment for auto-immune diseases?
28 January 2008
VIB researchers have elucidated the function of MALT1, a key player in controlling inflammatory reactions. They are the first to show that MALT1 is able to cleave the A20 protein, which inhibits inflammation.
