ERC-grants for three VIB scientists: boost for innovative research

9 December 2013

This time, the so-called 'consolidators' are rewarded: scientists (PhD 7-12 years) who already showed to be able to run their own lab. The European Research Council's grant allows them to anchor the start of a high risk/high gain program, feasible through this recognition of nearly 2 Mio€ per scientist.

Two VIB-scientists, Diether Lambrechts and Jan Cools, both VIB/KU Leuven, are working in the cancer field (demethylation of DNA / RNA regulation role in the development of T-ALL leukemia and other types).

The third scientist, Nico Callewaert (VIB/UGent), introduces a technology-driven project where he assumes that sugar modifications on proteins can be used as a kind of 'hands' with which we are able to bind therapeutic proteins to targeted cells and tissues.
