Central services

VIB is a non-profit, autonomous research institute, headed by a general assembly and a board of directors. The general management is responsible for running VIB on a daily basis. The institute is scientifically led by its scientific directors, who head the VIB research departments. The institutional advisory board assists VIB in its institutional policy.

The general assembly is the organisation's most senior body and consists of 35 members from academic, public and industrial and civil society.

The board of directors consists heads the association and represents it extrajudicially. It consists of 13 representatives from academics, industry and government.

The general management, Jo Bury and Johan Cardoen (Managing Directors), ensures the institute’s daily management. They are assisted by Rik Audenaert, Chief Financial Officer, Marijke Lein, Human Resources Director, Wim Goemaere, Chief Operating Officer and a central team of co-workers.

The scientific directors head the VIB research departments and guarantee their department’s and the institute’s scientific leadership. They make up the institute’s management committee together with the general management, the Financial Director and the Human Resources Director.

The group leader committtee consists of one group leader from each department and the associated VIB-groups. Their primary mission is to assist in defining and implementing the institutional scientific strategy.

An institutional advisory board, which regularly formulates recommendations to VIB, was put together in 2002 to assist VIB in its institutional policy.
