Personnel The great strength of VIB lies in its people. Worth a special mention here is the fact that, in 2010, the number of Ph.D. students rose to 417.		Research In 2010, VIB researchers achieve over 100 scientific breakthroughs, including 10 in Nature, Cell en Science.		Policy A formal acknowledgement of VIB’s excellence strategy was the decision of the European Commission to award ERC grants to four VIB researchers in the past year.

Startups In 2010, Multiplicom, the youngest VIB startup, brought diagnostics on the market for certain tumors and cystic fibrosis.		Communications Together with Gimv and Biotech Fund Flanders, VIB held a second Biotechnology Day at the Technology Park in Zwijnaarde.		Financial The Flemish government invests M€ 37.5 in VIB’s excellence program.

VIB's Research Training Course In 2010, VIB’s Research Training Course (VRTC) program got off to a solid start. Four hundred researchers attended 21 training days.		Techtransfer Eleven candidate drugs derived from VIB research are making their way to the patient. Numerous field tests are based on VIB inventions.		Field trials 2010 yielded the first harvest for the poplar field test. Meanwhile, VIB has joined as a partner in another field test project with GM potatoes.
