Postdoctoral Researcher

VIB group
VIB Department for Molecular Biomedical Research, UGent

Job description

The research unit of Dr. Peter Vandenabeele is hiring a postdoctoral scientist (3-6 years of postdoc experience) to work on molecular mechanisms of cell death and inflammation with focus on caspases and RIP kinases. The decision of a cell to die or to survive depends on balances between modifying enzymes such as kinases and phosphatases, ubiquitinating and deubiquitinating enzymes, caspases. In order to identify modifying enzymes and small drugs that affect cell survival and cell death, we will set up RNAi screenings and chemical compound screenings on reporter cell lines using a High Content Screening platform.
The position is available in the InterReg Euregional PACTII network (http://www.euregionalpactii.eu/index.php) which is focused on the use of Annexin V derivatives in diagnosis and therapy. Annexin V is a multifunctional protein involved in cell death, phagocytosis and immunomodulation. The scientific part of the project is a collaboration between the universities of Maastricht, Aachen, Leuven, Antwerpen and Gent. Gent is responsible for the multiparameter analysis of effects of Annexin V derivatives in cell death and inflammation on cells.

Job Discription

- We look for a postdoc scientist who wants to start up and supervise a HCS platform.
- Development of simple and robust screening and reporter assays in cell death and inflammation.
- Running high content experiments in cell death and inflammation (multiparameter analysis).
- Running high content screenings in cell death and inflammation (RNAi libraries, chemical compound libraries).
- Collaboration with technician.

Starting date of the employment: as soon as possible
End date: 31/03/2012

Profile
  • We are looking for a highly motivated, creative independently-thinking postdoctoral researcher, with a good record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Candidate should have a strong background in molecular biology, cell biology and/or immunity and be skilled in a wide variety of molecular biology methods.
  • Experience in high content screening platform is a plus.
  • Use of bioinformatics tools (data mining) is a plus.
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills.
  • Good communicative skills and the ability to work independently as well as within the team are essential.
  • Candidate should be interested to work in an academic environment , taking on some duties that are associated with this (training of PhD and master students)

We offer

- Temporary contract (end of the project is 31/03/12), but with very good prospects for other grant applications and prolongation, since the HCS will become a platform organized as a discover/service facility.
- Scientific environment in VIB (www.vib.be) with a high critical mass, core facilities available (PSF, animal house, transgenic facility, tissue culture, Flow cytometry & FACS analysis, mass spectrometry, microscopy, proteomics, transcriptomics, bioinformatics).
-  A state-of-the-art HCS platform.
- Competitive salary.
- The beautiful historical and cultural environment of the lively student city Gent (http://www.visitgent.be/?ch=VGG) 30 min away from Brussels, 2 hours form Paris, 3 hours from London.
