Job description
A three years postdoctoral position is immediately available to work on the “Neuronal functions of the Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein”. The Fragile X mental retardation Syndrome results from the absence of functional FMRP protein. We have shown that FMRP is involved in the translational regulation of key neuronal mRNAs through a novel eIF4E-Binding Protein, which also has a possible link with Autism (Zalfa et al., Cell 2003; Napoli et al., Cell 2008). Furthermore, we have recently characterized a novel function of FMRP in mRNA metabolism (Zalfa et al., Nature Neurosci. 2007).
The project will include and extend the characterization and functional analysis of synaptic RNA(s) and protein(s) that interact with FMRP in the context of regulation of synaptic protein synthesis in mental retardation as well Autism. The potential candidate/s will utilize several mouse models in combination with cell biology, biochemistry and proteomics strategies to study spine dysmorphogenesis and synaptic plasticity. The lab is strongly multidisciplinary and has a background in molecular neurobiology, cell biology of the neuron, biochemistry, cell morphology.
The laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience is located at the Department of Molecular and Developmental Genetics that is an outstanding international research centre.
