VIB MicroArray Facility, K.U.Leuven

Current team members:

VIB has an established service facility focused on the use of DNA chips. A dedicated team of 7 people is devoting its time to conduct micro array experiments as a service to the academic and industrial society. Since its inception in 1999, the service facility has run over a 1,000 array experiments resulting in more than 7 million data-points and can hence count on a significant experience.

Through agreements with Affymetrix, Agilent Technologies and Amersham Biosciences the MicroArray Facility recently expanded its spectrum with the three major commercially available DNA chip platforms. By combining our in-house micro arrays with the commercial technologies, our facility is able to conduct expression profiling experiments in a large set of organisms and on all major micro array platforms.

In-house micro arrays
The service facility has the ability to work with DNA chips based on ESTs and cDNAs. The following plethora of experiments can be conducted:

  • Arrays containing 21,000 human cDNA sequences
  • Arrays containing 22,000 mouse cDNA sequences
  • Arrays containing 90% of the complete expressed Arabidopsis genome or 26,000 GST’s (Gene Specific Tags)
  • Arrays containing the complete Yeast genome in 70bp oligonucleotides

In addition, the MicroArray Facility can spot your preferred collection of DNA sequences or any gene-subset of existing micro arrays on your personal or customized micro array.

Industrially printed micro arrays
To accommodate better your needs, the VIB facility is a fully licensed and recognized service provider for 3 different commercial micro array platforms:

  • Affymetrix (GeneChip®)
  • Agilent Technologies (Agilent SurePrint)
  • Amersham Biosciences (CodeLink™).

In contrast to the in-house arrays, the three commercial platforms are based on the use of oligonucleotides. Thanks to VIB’s access to these platforms we can offer services to conduct expression profiling experiments with human, mouse, rat, C. elegans, Drosophila, Arabidopsis, yeast, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E. coli using oligo-based arrays.

Services
The service facility wants to distinguish itself from commercial micro array facilities by giving as much as possible personalized and complete service with follow-up help and advice. The purpose of the facility is to provide researchers access to a full micro array analysis service that includes:

  • Advice in experimental set-up
  • Advice in choosing the appropriate technology platform
  • Quality check of RNA integrity and RNA purity
  • Probe labeling starting from 5µg down to 100ng total RNA
  • Quality check of labeled materials
  • Hybridization, scanning and image analysis
  • Data pre-processing
  • Micro array follow-up with customized small size cDNA-arrays
  • Advice in data analysis
  • Deposition of data in ArrayExpress (MIAME compliant)
