Introduction :
The Department of Molecular Genetics has longstanding expertise in genetics of complex human diseases using different genetic techniques. For the benefit of its researchers, we initiated in 2001 a centralized Genetic Service Facility (GSF) to modernize, accelerate and optimize different genetic analyses by using high-throughput robotic platforms. The GSF uses an integrated state-of-the-art high throughput genetic screening platform. This robotic platform is build around a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and comprises two 96-capillary sequencers (ABI3730XL, Applied Biosystems) for sequencing and microsatellite genotyping, a MassARRAY Nanodispenser and Compact Analyzer (Sequenom) and a PSQTM HS96A System (Biotage) for SNP genotyping, and Biomek FX and NX robots for pre- and post-processing of templates. In 2008, this platform was extended with a Genome Sequencer FLX (Roche), a next-generation massive parallel sequencer. From the start we are providing part of the robotic capacity for genetic services to third parties. For more information on these genetic services, consult GSF  our website.

Within VIB, the GSF provides standard DNA sequencing service to VIB researchers at marginal cost. For more information on the standard sequencing services, contact Hubert Backhovens or consult our website.

In addition, they have access to non-standard genetic and genomic service and technology development provided by our Technology Unit (TU) embedded in the research group Applied Molecular Genomics of Prof. Jurgen Del-Favero. These include advanced sequencing services including e.g. SNP discovery through PCR based resequencing using proprietary SNPbox and NovoSNP software, primer walking for large insert plasmid sequencing and large scale genomic sequencing (cosmids, PACSs/BACs, library sequencing). Related services comprise design of genotyping assays and design of multiplex PCR based genotyping assays using proprietary software. We offer a 8 cM STR-based human genome scan service. This service uses an in house developed multiplex genome scan panel and allows a complete genome scan in 30 PCR reactions, resulting in low prices per genotype. For more information on these services, consult our website or contact Dirk Goossens or Jurgen Del-Favero.

The Genetic Service Facility recently acquired a GS FLX next-generation DNA sequencing system. More info here.
