While computers are becoming increasingly powerful, biological experiments in the current OMICS era are generating an overflow of data. As a consequence, more and more researchers are turning to bioinformatics to extract biological knowledge from their experimental data.
To respond to the increasing importance of bioinformatics in biotechnology research, the BioInformatics Training and Service facility, BITS, was set up at VIB. The goals of BITS are twofold: provide training in the use of bioinformatics tools and databases and provide bioinformatics services to both wet-lab and bioinformatics researchers.
The BITS website puts bioinformatics research at VIB in the picture. Visitors are presented an overview of all bioinformatics related publications of VIB scientists and all bioinformatics tools developed at VIB. It also contains information on several useful bioinformatics services available on the internet.
Bioinformatics training With the bioinformatics training program, BITS aims to bring all VIB researchers in contact with bioinformatics tools that can help them in their projects. The program consists of courses and workshops taught by bioinformatics tutors from both VIB and other research institutions. The BITS website lists the upcoming training courses and hosts course materials.
Bioinformatics services BITS offers all VIB scientists access to bioinformatics software tools such as Vector-NTI and data mining tools such as Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, Genemaths-XT and GeneVestigator. BITS also supports local access to Ariadne Genomics and GeneGO. In addition, custom data mining for specific projects is provided as a service to all VIB departments.
