Increases of scale, miniaturisation and high through-flows are essential in the life-sciences. Researchers want to know the role of biomolecules in their cellular context, which means research systems are needed that gather a large quantity of information in a short period of time. Flemish researchers also needed an increase of scale of this kind. For this reason, the VIB introduced service facilities that made these through-flow technologies available to academic and industrial researchers in Flanders.
Within the finishing of the first draft sequence of the human genome, a very exciting era, the so-caled Post-Genomc Era, has begun. Just looking at the new words that arose in the last couple of years, like Genome, Transcriptome, Proteome, Metabolome, Physiome, it is clear that research in life sciences is progressing exponentially.
VIB established several core facilities focused on advanced technologies. These service facilities operate in a fee-for-service mode and are available for both academic groups and companies.
