Xenotransplantation: the beast in Man...
Xenotransplantation is the transfer of organs, tissue or cells between different species of animal – for example, implanting a pig’s liver into a human being. The idea is not so new, because in the 17th century Russian doctors attempted to repair the cranium of an aristocrat with bones from a dog (whether the man survived the operation is not known). In the middle of the 20th century some success was achieved with organ transplants from apes to humans.
You can find out more about this controversial subject in the Dutch brochure 'Xenotransplantatie: het beest in de mens... (pdf - 1248 Kb)' (‘Xenotransplantation: the beast in Man…’). This brochure is based on a social research project of VIB.
