Why 'The Poplar Files'?

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) with the capacity to make a positive contribution to the environment have been, among other things,  the object of VIB research for over a decade now: our researchers are developing poplars with a modified wood composition that makes them more suitable for the production of bio-ethanol (and, in addition, for the production of paper that weighs less heavily on the environment).

This research received public attention when the federal government refused to grant a license for the next step in this research program: a small-scale field trial. The federal decision was made in spite of The Council for Biosafety fully condoning the risk analysis performed by VIB. By doing so, the federal authorities opted for a brutal thwarting of world class research, and of a most promising environmental industry. VIB, the Flemish authorities and ultimately the Council of State stated the federal ministers did so without valid arguments.

After a calvary of nine months, the refusal eventually was changed into a permit. On 6 May 2009 the first transgenic poplar was planted by minister Ceysens.

VIB takes up its responsability
VIB stands for a responsible development of biotechnology in Flanders. It desires its research to be solid and sound from a scientific, environmental, social, ethical and legal perspective. That is why VIB is strongly committed to the development of a legal framework that is transparent, offers legal certainty and the guarantee that it is being applied in a correct manner. Whenever anyone applies for a permit request, and meets every precondition, it should have the guarantee that the permit will be granted within a reasonable term.

The calvary
Because of the large public interest, we here give an overview of what happened.
